Finding a reputable foundation repair company?

Added January 8, 2007

Q. My home has severe foundation repair issues. I’ve got cracks in my drywall and brick that are getting longer and wider as the days go by. Many of the doors in the house do not shut the whole way. I’m a female, and I’m afraid that someone is going to try and rip me off.

Can you give me tips on finding a reputable foundation repair company? One of my big concerns is that they’ll give me an estimate, do the work, and then tell me “they had lots more work to do and its going to cost $XXXX more than expected”

A: Great Question. Getting ripped off my a contractor is always a worry for any homeowner – male, female, old, young, new. Doesn’t matter. The best way to avoid problems is to do your homework first. Here are a few tips I give to customers that should help to ease your mind:

First – go with a dealer of a product. There are a dozen or so large networks of contractors that offer a manufacturer’s line of products for the repair. ECP, Grip-Tite, Atlas, AB Chance, and Ramjack are a few. This will not guarantee the contractor does a good job, but it gives you a few advantages over the local Joe out of the phone book. First, he’ll be using an certified product that has been tested, approved, and has specific instructions for installation. Second, that contractor will have the benefit of the manufacturers help.

Secondly, do some research on the internet. Read our site or others for general information. Get a decent understanding of what can cause your foundation problems, and ideas for repairs.

Third – do your homework on the company. Search for their name in Google – that can dig up all kinds of information – good and bad. Before they come out for an estimate – ask them to tell you about their company – what are the benefits they offer over the next guy? Ask for references to be mailed/emailed to you. Also ask what associations they belong to (such as the National Foundation Repair and Waterproofing Association, or a local builders association).
